Designing Calibrated, Data-Driven UX
Technical hiring often suffers from inconsistent evaluation standards, interviewer bias, and lack of transparency. Karat addresses these challenges by implementing calibrated hiring bars—standardized, role-specific performance thresholds that all candidates are measured against using structured scoring rubrics and shared language. This calibration ensures every candidate is evaluated fairly and consistently. I led the UX design for Karat’s score calibration and benchmarking tools, which are central to maintaining these calibrated hiring bars.
Key aspects included:
Visualizing Calibration Scores & Benchmarks:
Created interactive dashboards that clearly display candidate scores against the calibrated hiring bar, role-specific benchmarks, and peer performance data. This helps hiring managers and interviewers understand where candidates stand in relation to the bar and across the talent pool.Supporting Transparent, Data-Driven Decisions:
Designed interfaces that show detailed score breakdowns by skill area, pass/fail outcomes, and historical calibration changes. This transparency builds trust in the process and supports auditability for compliance purposes.Highlighting Calibration Modifications:
Developed UI elements that notify users when the hiring bar or scoring rubric has been updated, ensuring all stakeholders are aware of changes and can adjust workflows accordingly. This feature supports continuous improvement and governance.Enabling Scalable Workflow Management:
Designed role-based access and management screens that allow hiring teams to configure and calibrate hiring bars for different roles, levels, and locations—supporting Karat’s global client base.
Impact & Outcomes
Fairness & Consistency: The calibrated scoring system, supported by my UX design, reduced interviewer bias and improved evaluation consistency across thousands of interviews worldwide.
Efficiency Gains: Karat’s clients reclaimed over 25,000 hours of engineering time by relying on calibrated, expert-led interviews rather than ad hoc internal interviews.
Candidate Experience: Transparent, human-centric calibration feedback helped candidates understand their performance and feel valued, increasing completion rates and satisfaction.
Compliance & Trust: Audit trails and clear calibration change notifications ensured regulatory compliance and internal governance, critical for enterprise clients.
Bring fairness, transparency, and consistency to complex decision-making processes
This skill, honed through my work on score calibration projects is highly transferable and can be applied effectively across multiple industries, including:
Finance: Designing risk scoring and credit decision dashboards that require clear, data-driven thresholds to ensure fair lending and compliance. Calibration UX helps financial institutions build trust with users by making complex risk data understandable and actionable.
Legal&Insurance
Healthcare: Developing calibrated assessment interfaces that reduce anxiety and improve trust in high-stakes clinical evaluations. Clear communication of scores and benchmarks helps patients and providers make informed decisions with confidence.
